What’s the Deal With Container Homes?

Mini Warehousing DOES NOT build or sell storage container homes.

We sell new & used steel containers from 6’ to 40’ that can be used for this project.

The latest trend seems to be shipping container homes—yes, that’s right. These large steel boxes, typically used for storage and transportation, are now used to construct living spaces. This usually involves welding together more than one container to make the structure bigger than traditional containers and adding necessary accessories and customizations.

Although Mini Warehousing offers various shipping container modifications—such as shelving, ventilation, windows, doors, and lighting—we do not build or sell already-built container homes. However, we sell new and used containers ranging from 6’ to 40’ and can be an excellent destination for purchasing the containers for your new home. Let’s get into the pros and cons of this new fad before you make any decisions.

Pros of Container Homes

If you’re considering building a home like this but remain on the fence, here are some pros that come with storage container homes for you to consider:

  1. Fast Construction: These shipping container homes can be completed much faster than traditional homes. Although it still takes time, the homes are smaller, and the frame (the container) has already been built, so modifications are necessary only.
  2. Durability and Strength: Our steel containers can withstand various weather conditions and constant movement. Thanks to the steel frame, these container homes are incredibly durable and built to protect your belongings from all elements.
  3. Mobility: Another unique feature of storage container homes is the ability to relocate them.

Cons of Container Homes

We can’t provide you with a list of pros without giving you some cons to consider. There are some challenges and downsides that come with these homes:

  1. Limited Space: Possibly one of the more apparent negatives – and not always a negative depending – is the limited space that comes with these homes. It isn’t the best place for a large family or multiple roommates.
  2. High Temperatures: This may not be something you’d consider, but these homes can get extremely warm in the summer as they aren’t equipped with venting and cooling systems. Insulation, A/C, and fans all help but can only do so much.
  3. Zoning and Permits: Because these homes are newer to the market, some cities lack regulations, resulting in zoning and permit processes taking longer than usual. We recommend contacting your local city office for more information about building codes, zoning restrictions, and permitting requirements.
