Supporting Public Art in Boston
Rose Kennedy Greenway Projection Command Center
Located in the heart of Boston, the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy commissions larger-than-life murals to provide free access to contemporary works of art and spark discussion.
We partnered with Studio HHH and the Greenway as they transformed the murals using projected light. Our goal was to create a clean, unobtrusive command center that housed the projection controls and let the art take center stage.
Process
We first partnered with the Greenway in 2023 to activate Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs’ mural, Breathe Life Together. Every night, from dusk to 11 PM, the mural would be transformed into a moving light show using mapped projected imagery. To accomplish this, the team needed a command center that could house the projector, the controls, and a small group of operators.
We built a custom 8′ container, giving the installation a secure, weatherproof command center that kept all equipment protected and out of sight.
Our next engagement was in 2026, animating Jeffrey Gibson’s larger-than-life mural, titled “your spirit whispering in my ear.”
We built on what we learned in 2023 to deliver a new and improved projection command center. The new container blends into the surroundings with a forest green paint job and the heat is managed with an expanded ventilation system, cooling down the command center during long evening runs.
The Mini Warehousing team is involved in every step of the process, from initial design to event execution. Since Cisco’s Fenway beer garden is a seasonal recurring event, we collaborate with the Cisco team on delivery, setup, and takedown.
When the beer garden opens up for the season, there are constant deliveries to the downtown Boston site, an area which is cramped even in the best of times. Because of the tight space, there’s a careful order of operations when it comes to deliveries. Our team collaborates with Cisco and other vendors to make sure the containers are delivered in the correct order and orientation so there are no future headaches or adjustments.
About the Project
